My boyfriend wants to legally adopt my daughter. Do we have to be married? The non-custodial parent is willing to give up their rights, to keep trying to research, but I get mixed responses. A website where lawyers answer questions had one lawyer say yes and another no both in Louisiana. It would be silly if we were to get married because a single person can legally adopt under the Louisiana foster system so I don't see why I would need to be married for my boyfriend to adopt my own child.
